It could then be very easy to say L is for L = 50 in Roman Numeral, but why was L chosen as 50.
Possibly it starts with the Etruscan symbol for 10 = X where the half was adopted for 5 = V, or was it the opposite way that V symbolize the hand (with 5 fingers), and 10 = X is two hands.
L has the same shape (more straight) and could be the symbol of half C = 100/2 = 50.
Anyone who believe in this theory?
The last days I have used some photos from Dublin, Irland in my blogposts. It feels natural to continue this practice by adding another Dublin photo today.

In the Basilica di San Frediano in Lucca you can visit the mummified body of Saint Zita.

ReplyDeleteI have no reason to compete with Mrs Nesbit why do you feel that i am ? Wordless Wed has been around for a very long time. I don't think it is right for you to make that kind of a comment to anyone. Not that i need to explain myself, but i wanted to try something different. I happen to like the Mr Linky option for when there are lots of posters. Since Mrs.Nesbit took it away here it was harder to visit, as it is a pain to go to her site and keep scrolling down to people that have commented. Hopefully it will be better once she puts up a blog roll.

ReplyDeleteAs always you have an iLLuminating seLection of Ls for your presentation. The Italian photos give me nostalgia, and the Dublin ones make me wonder what I missed in Ireland many years ago. I think my visual memories are more of the countryside, and my city ones of the lovely lady, mother of a friend back home, who hosted us there.

ReplyDeleteLots of nice Ls and nice photos, too. I had never seen the Velasquez Gioconda that I can recall. Did you visit Lucca specifically because it was Puccini's birthplace or is there something else there - besides beautiful architecture and great food? :)
I am so impressed with all the 'l's you posted...I can barely think of One and yours are always so creative....and I am not so sure about the roman numeral theroy!!!!
