Public Laundry or Cancer Pink Ribbon

If visiting Aker Brygge this week you have no chance to miss the Pink Ribbon Campaign. Hundreds of bras are hanging between light masts and with the City Hall in the background we thought somebody was doing public laundry. Click on the photo and search for your size. The upcoming Saturday the Pink Ribbon March for Solidarity will be arranged, and it is still time to plan your visit to Oslo and joining.
If present at Aker Brygge don´t miss all the sculptures, and this Cello Player can be found inside the Shopping Mall. For those of you more interested in flowers the Royal Garden is beautiful this fall. Welcome.

Bridge over river Spree Berlin

In this month Bridges Between I take you to Berlin where we cross the western bridge of river Spree at MuseumInsel and visit the Lustgarten and Berliner Dom (in the background.) The bridge is at the end of Unter den Linden and at the start of Karl-Liebknecht Strasse towards Alexanderplatz.
I have made this post to help Sarah Palin in her afford to get some knowledge in foreign politics. Berlin is one city now! Her latest interview worried me, but feel free to make your own judgement. Don´t expect her to know anything about Norway.

I present the Bridges meme a week early due to other activities next Monday, and in the meantime we do as Leonard Cohen Take Berlin.

Circling Lake Sognsvann

In autumns we walk in nature here in Norway. One of the most visited areas in Oslo is Lake Sognsvann close to my cottage or summer residence. Circling from my cottage around the lake and back takes approximately one hour.
Starting by crossing the Olle Bolle Bridge we see Vettakollen Hill to the left and the cornfields up to Løkka farm from 1800 with the horses. The path is normally crowded on Sundays but there are many places for photo safari and ideas for paintings. You may find several places to rest and let children play even though the water is a little too cold for bathing this time of the year.Back at Tullarbo (it is closed) we have nothing to do except take a break at the natural fungus chair and cutting some roses to bring home down town.

Saturday Urban Life - Louis Vuitton , Aker Brygge and just a drink

Louis Vuitton and the Window show in his Boutique here in Oslo start this Saturday strolling (or photo Safari if that is a better meme). It is BAG Fashion this fall.
The Aker Brygge area is still a place to visit although the tourists are fewedr, and at Cafe Sorgenfri the new Buffet Lunch is absolute worth a recommendation. But so is a glass of wine and a beer.

Memories from the past

Asbjørn, Helge, Per Helge and Harald.
This weekend 34 years ago some good friends met for two (or more) purposes at Sykkylven, Sunnmøre, Norway.
First we had to do some farming activity like harvesting potatoes. The Potato-picking holiday is in modern Norway replaced by the Autumn School Leave which in 2008 also starts this weekend.
In addition to digging in the ground for new potatoes, we had to do extensive testing of Asbjørn´s homemade beer. (see the barrel in the background).
Angela studied physics in Leipzig at the age of 20 that time and could have participated, but had probably other activities that weekend too.We also "celebrated" Asbjørn´s birthday, and participated in different activities not to be made public.
Have a nice Weekend and School Leave wherever (Voss, Rhodos, Berlin etc.) you go.

Oktoberfest in Berlin

A historical day

September 25th is one of the dates that need to be presented with content to visitors from all over the world. In the year 1066, 25th of September according to the Julian Calendar, marks the end of the Viking Age.
At the village of Stamford Bridge, East Riding of Yorkshire in England, shortly after the invading Norwegian army under King Harald Hardråde had defeated the army of the northern earls Edwin of Mercia and Morcar of Northumbria at the Battle of Fulford two miles south of York, the last Anglo-Saxon King of England before the Norman Conquest Harold II killed the majority of the Norwegian Vikings along with our king Harald. In the year 1903, 25th of September, according to the Gregorian Calendar, the latvian-born American Painter Mark Rothko was born.In the year 1972, 25th of September, the Norwegian People with 53,5 % in a referendum said NO to join the European Community (EEC, present EU).

In the year 1978, 25th of September, exactly 30 years ago, I got my Driving Licence.

A summer is over

It is time to close the summer residence for this season. We moved home three weeks ago. did some maintenance and made plans for activity when the sun has turned, the snow disappeared and spring 2009 is coming.
Some roses are still trying to deny that the temperature during night hours is close to zero or even below. They love the sunshine during a few hours, but never make to open to the full blossom.
The plastic cover is wrapped around the open balcony. The garden furniture is carried inside. No values are left behind. It is time to say goodbye. The summer is over.
Some apples (Lobo) are still hanging in the neighbour´s trees. The shadows are growing longer. It is Autumn.

September Sunday morning

Out of bed with a smile. The sun is sharing its beams of lights outside my bedroom window. Bacon and Eggs for breakfast. Morning greetings from the web. Ready to start the day.Another "Marius" made by Tullen is sent over to Wales and makes these british children look a little Norwegian.

Happy birthday Henrik

Organ Donation - here and there

First some information about Organ Donation from the Homepages of the Ministry of Health and Care Services (Norwegian.) A lot of links can be found on the right side of that page.
You can here find more information about the administration´s actions to increase numbers of donations and here INTERNATIONAL FIGURES ON ORGAN DONATION AND TRANSPLANTATION - 2007

Second i give my Norwegian reading visitors a possibility to learn more about what the Minister Bjarne Håkon Hansen have initiated under the name Samhandlingsreformen

Norway is using most money within Health and welfare care in the world, but is not close to getting the expected Return of Investment (RoI). It is the system that is wrong. Failure in communication between different actors are the largest hurdle towards Quality Improvement, according to the administration.
(thanks to our contact in HOD for initial information)

We, who has been lucky receiving an organ from another when most needed, often feel that saving life is one thing, but the follow up in the years to come has not the same focus. Less and less resources seams to be prioritized to maintain the fantastic Gift for Life at hospitals, and the actors around the country have not been given training and resources to take over the control and support. RoI within this field should also be part of the TQM systems included in the "reform".
May be the Lov og forskrift om individuell plan for rehabilitation and continuous care must be required next time we see our doctors and visit "Rikshospitalet" for the annual control.

Third I want to draw special attention to the "Grey´s Anatomy" star Katherine Heigl and her mother Nancy and the Heigl family´s tireless work to raise awareness of organ, eye and tissue donation. This is a subject very close to their hearts, as Katherine's brother Jason was a donor after he was tragically killed in a car accident in 1986.
Katherine and her mother has received the Dr. James S. Wolf Courage Award

Weekend activity - Repainting at the cottage

Odd Shot Monday?
From our trip to Italy in 2006 together with friends from the Norwegian association for Heart Lung Transplant (FHLT) participating in the European Sport Games for Heart Lung Transplant.

I don´t know if the following photos qualify for the Odd shot Monday meme, but after 31 summers living in an apple crate (although covered with Koreapanel for many years) we decided to do something really odd. Remove the red Sandwich panel in the "living room", and paint the 78 years old raw panel with the new Jotun Lady.Lists to be dark grey (and probably the dining room walls the same)
Cooperation is a must while working in the living room. I like to work in upright position, while my wife is working better near the floor (vertigo)
No reason not to smile and to worry about the old colors. Light blue-grey in the "living room", and you can imaging the effect if the "dining room" if darkened to the same color as the lists.

Boring TV evening ?, or Peter Sellers inspector Clouseau giving great laughter in The Pink Panther Strikes Again
"The blogging ladies" having fun in Bergen, sent greetings like:en liten hilsen fra noen rødvinspregede damer på husmorferie and gave me the opportunity to share one of the present warnings regarding too much red wine. Hopefully more cover stories from the blog meeting will be presented the coming days.

Saturday Urban Life - Oslo

My report from today Photo Safari takes you down town to the main street of Oslo - Karl Johan - and back to Uranienborg.

At the University Square the Geological section at UiO present the development of the Earth from our solar system was created 4568 - 4564 million years ago until today.

At The main street, Karl Johan, they arranged Market day offering most of the products from the shops at Paleet with 50% discount.Further down the Street Musicians are entertaining shoppers and strollers. As normal we had lunch at Cafe Christiania, but an alternative, especially when the Lutefisk season starts, can be found at Stortorvet Gjærstgiveri.Strolling home we see that the autumn colors are coming on the city walls
and new signs are decorating the neighborhood.(Koordinasjonskomitéen (KK) leading the attitude fight during 2nd ww)

September 11, 2001 - seven years ago - I was sitting in front of my TV, watching horrible actions from the sky over New York. The terror became part of my life in my own sitting room. The world changed completely.

Tuesday facts: JA/Yes to Organ Donation

The use of Human organs for transplantation has steadily increased during the past decades.
Organ transplantation is now the most cost-effective treatment for end-stage renal failure. For end-stage failure of organs such as liver, lung and heart, it is the only available treatment.
The shortage of organs is a major factor affecting transplantation programmes.
Nearly 40 000 patients are now on waiting lists in Europe. In Norway the waiting lists as about 250 patients
These figures do not represent the true position. Because of the chronic shortage of organs, some transplant clinicians are extremely selective about the patients they put on the waiting list. Currently only those patients most likely to benefit will be even considered for transplantation.

The interchange of organs between EU member states is up to 20% of the total of organ transplants. Click on the links for facts from Euro Transplant and detailed figures given by Scandia Transplant.

First kidney transplantation took place in USA in 1954. In Norway 224 patients received one or more organs during the first 6 months of 2008. Some of the highlights in the transplantation timeline are shown here:(data from eurotransplant)
1954: First living donor kidney transplant (USA)
1963: First cadaveric donor kidney transplant (Belgium)
1963: First successful living donor kidney transplant (Norway)
1966: First pancreas/kidney transplant (USA)
1967: First heart transplant (South-Africa)
1967: First liver transplant (USA)
1981: First heart-lung transplant (USA)
1981: First heart transplant (Germany)
1983: First single-lung transplant (Canada)
1983: First heart-lung transplant (Germany)
1983: First Heart transplant (Norway)
1986: First double-lung transplant (USA)
1987: First intestine transplant (USA)
1987: First single-lung transplant (Austria)
1988: First split-liver transplant (USA)
1988: First split-liver transplant (Germany)
1989: First living donor liver transplant (USA)
1989: First intestine transplant (Austria)
1990: First living donor lung transplant (USA)
1990: First lung transplant (Norway)
1998: First combined Heart Kidney transplant (Norway)
1998: First combined Heart Lung Liver transplant (Norway)
All over the world we need to say JA/YES to Organ Donation.
A European Consensus Document of current status and strategies for improvement of organ donation, can be downloaded in Pdf format

Truls Zimmer (TX-pulm bilateral) has designed a logo which can be used as a background for your mobile phone. He has also (as I) put the logo into his own blog. By presenting the logo in your blog you show others your point of view to the challenge regarding organ shortage.

In addition you are free to fill in a Donor Card (my daughter called last week and told us that she now carries the card in her wallet) or
register your decision if that is the procedure in your own country.
However, most important wherever you are, is to talk to your family about your desire to donate organs and/or tissue if there is no longer hope for saving your own life. Your relatives will always be asked about your standpoint regarding your Gift for life. The figure can be downloaded as a poster here
Take a stand
, show it to visiting bloggers and ask them to do the same.

Monday, September 8

Monday Odd Shot

Today I give you a photo of a poster I had in my bachelor apartment. Don´t ask why.
More important it is to think about our remains if there is no more hope for survival. Will you donate your organs and thus save up to eight lives. Tissue donations can enhance the lives of as many as 75 others.
If you feel this is serious, visit my blog tomorrow, and until then have fun with my second photo and other odd shot this monday

Reineskarvet and Hallingskarvet

As a follow-up of this week autumn colors photo safari in the Norwegian mountains, I will this Sunday bring you to the north western part of Buskerud County, which will mean that the photo shots are close to the very inner center of south Norway.

I will start with Hallingskarvet (highest peak Folarskardnuten 1933m) which you can see behind me on this photo taken from Sangefjell 1197m, in Hol municipality. Tullen (carrying my jacket) is much closer on this photo and invites you to a meeting at the foremost Norwegian Philosopher Arne Næss cabin "Tvergastein". Start at Prestholt and take the Philosophy Tour
Naess calls his own ultimate philosophy Ecosophy T. It is deeply influenced by Norwegian friluftsliv (a movement to experience living in the outdoors, see Henderson, 1997), Gandhian nonviolence, Mahayana Buddhism and Spinozan pantheism. T refers to Tvergastein, Naess's mountain hut in Norway, where much of Ecosophy T was worked out. The T also refers to the Norwegian word for interpretation (tolkning) which is central to his philosophy of language and communication. A basic norm in Naess's Ecosophy T is Self realization!--for all beings. The Self to be realized for humans is not the ego self (small s), but the larger ecological Self (cap S). This self/Self distinction has affinities with Mahayana Buddhism. Naess says we can realize our ecological Selves in a number of ways. The way he talks most about is extension of identification. He prefaces this by saying that he assumes one is well integrated and has a healthy ego so as to avoid projection of the small self and its shadow.
In the following photo you can see the cabin at the ridge of the hill behind me. The path down the hill was easier to go than climbing up.North east of Hallingskarvet we find Reineskarvet in Ål municipality.
The way up is quite easy if you start in "Lauvdalen" and climb westward.
Looking east you can see the "Lauvdals knappen" and the Blue Moutains. At the lake above Tullens head, there is a small mountain farm where she stayed three summers at the age of 8 to 11. Returning to this place 40 years later made many memories and feelings come back.
At the eastern summit (1733m) the wind requires more clothes.
and there is a fantastic view to the north, Jotunheimen and the highest summits in Norway. Click at the photo and see the peaks.

More Autumn colors from Bjorli

Yesterday I gave you a view of how the autumn in Norwegian mountains can be. The photo was taken in 2002 during a weekend together with old friends at Bjorli. I continue today with more shots from this beautiful area. The first photo is from the top of the first chair lift serving 660 m of vertical drop with a view towards "Brøstedalen" and the Tafjord Mountains. The next is at a little lower altitude in the same area. This photo is from Asbjørndalen (like yesterday photo but higher up) where you may track towards Gråhø 2014m
The sky in north east direction towards Lesja
If you are ready for more autumn mountain adventures follow my postings

Sky photo will be posted on Friday

Hunting for Autumn colors near the sky will be major task the coming days

My hats and other headgear

Every May 17th the Royal Family of Norway stand at the Royal Palace Balcony and greets the Children parade.
They all wear hats, and media (and my wife) are always concerned with the ladies´headgear that change according to fashion. The King and Crown Prince´s silk hats are always the same.

As readers of this blog know I am often wearing hat, but also other headgear like headscarfs, sou´wester and caps.

As a young boy when joining the school-band and playing the trombone, special uniform headgear had to be used. The first photo is from Cristmas 1963 in the band´s uniform. The next photo is taken three years later and if not in black and white, the cap would be blue. The more formal Student´s Cap which is the only time I used that, and also the last time that I had no hair on the chin and lower cheeks .For many years I only had one cap. This I "got" from a baby at Mallorca, Spain early 70s. The blue and white cap followed me on holidays year after year. Still some in my family wants to use it at the cottage during summertime. This photo is from early 90s during a sailing race in the fjord of Oslo.I am not so fond of caps anymore. But when the cold wind is blowing during fishing or the hairless skull needs protection for the development of skin cancer, it is possible to see me working with that boring headgear.Party hats have also been part of my outfit.Dancing in the dark and Rally driver with Bowler
Some times I was looking like a lumberjack
When casual and in informal situations I have many examples of using headscarfs (like a pirate) in red, blue, white or blackThe above is from a "Christmas party" at Bjorli, Norway and the next photos are from Italy.
Alberobello, Puglia Matera, Basilicata
But in Verona, Veneto I am wearing a handmade crochet capOf course, I also wear hats on vacation. The next one is from Pescheria del Garda, ItalyMy Black Beret has also been around the world like Fuengirola, Spain and Hamburg, GermanyThen the time has come to present some of my collection of hats for summer and more darker seasons.
The last buy this summer was the Panama Hat.but at the cottage I have several other light hats for shade during Cafe Avec or when working outdoors in sunshine.
and the last light beige is from Kiel, GermanyOne of my blue hats I wear on the next picture together with my wife and another hat user; the art painter Terje Fagermo. The one with the red ribbon is blackand the first brown hat is the same as the one at my blogger headingwhile the second is from last winter investment. When writing this post I have found out that I still have some hats in the hat shelf without photos taken, so I move on to a headgear that I only use if the stormy weather and heavy rain. It makes no need for umbrella, and is my Sydvest. Looks almost like a firefighter helmetWe started with hats used by royalties at our Constitution day, and end this cocktail with mine own creation (and Tullen´s Mantilla / Kjærringskaut) as part of our national costumes, worn on the same day.The fall and winter are coming closer. Not only skin cancer has to be taken seriously. Hats and other headgear may be useful in the months to come for all of us.

ABCW - Guide to Goodies

Tuesday morning I received a mail from Emma Williams, Manageing Editor of Schmap Guides. She told me that one of my photos on Flickr had been short-listed for inclusion in the fifth edition of Schmap Vienna Guide, to be published at the end of this month.
The photo shows the original Sachertorte at Hotel Sacher in Vienna, and can in addition to Flickr be found at My me.com Gallery together with other photos from Wien April 2005.
The choice for today´s meme is therefore easy:

G is for Guide to Goodies
The mail also reminded me of an earlier post at this blog. On January 31. 2008 I posted You are not alone (and did not think about Liverpool FC anthem.)
The mail showed that even small details from your internet activity find the way to someone else out-there. If everybody linking up at ABC Linky today took the time to visit and comment on the close to 100 others, you would really feel not alone.
G is for the Great Life Cycle of a Blog Post, From Servers to Spiders to Suits — to You

Tuesday Facts - Fighting Walls

Facts coming:
1. Returned from the cottage on Saturday, but back yesterday afternoon where we worked more than two hours with removing old panels on the walls. The old and original walls appeared and will be treated according to present commands from the Lady of the house. At the end of the month or next spring you will see the ROI (return on investment).
2. Prior to these hours of carpentering I had to put paintings on my studio walls. Some new and some done some time ago. (believe this method was not what the ladies at Trøndelag meant) 3. The most important fact for this Tuesday was, however, that I yesterday once more started to exercise at my fitness center Elixia.
I have since the DVT (Economy class syndrome) last fall had some motivation problems with the training. It has been a hurdle or even a thick wall to pass. Now the first visit is over and my body hurts but more regular visits will come. Every second day form now on. The body needs it.

Olle Bolle Bridge

In all the years we stayed at Tullarbo together with our two girls, we frequented the beautiful nature in Oslomarka close to the cottage. Sundays walks to Ullevålseter and Kobberhaughytta, or as far as Kikut-stua was always accompanied with singing. One of the songs was:
Oppe på fjellet der bor det tre trolle
Trollefar og Trollemor og lille Olle Bolle
sier Trollefar, sier Trollemor,
men den lille Olle Bolle sier bare .
We even named a small bridge crossing the creek "Sognsvannbekken" for Olle Bolle Bridge.
The Building Bridges of September 2008 is thus dedicated to building gaps between generations. If you don´t remember or cannot sing the melody please see here before going to watch more Bridges at Visual Norway Rune´s way
